Step-by-Step Guide on Making a Crystal String Necklace DIY

Once you have picked your crystal out for your necklace, it is time to get crafting! By combining macrame with crystals, you can create a unique necklace to wear or give to someone you love.

• A Crystal
• String or Thread
• Scissors

I am using a rough Citrine to make my macrame crystal necklace with orange embroidery thread. The embroidery thread was a bit difficult to work with, but I really like how the orange looks with the Citrine crystal!

Let’s go through the steps to create your own crystal string necklace. 

Step 1: Cut Your String 

The first thing you need to do is cut three lengths of string. They should be around 40 inches long, but it also depends on the size of the crystal and how long you want your necklace to be. I recommend cutting it longer than you think you want it, as you can always cut it short!

Step 2: Fit Your String Around the Bottom of the Stone 

Once you have your string, it is time to make a holder for the base of your stone. Position your crystal how you want it then loop the string around its base and tie it with a noose knot. 

Step 3: Add the Other Pieces of String 

Attach your other two pieces of string to your loop. Try to make the distance between the three knots even, as it will create a secure base for your stone. Then fit your crystal snugly in the base you have made. 

Step 4: Add Netting Around Your Stone

Now for the fiddly bit! Take different bits of thread from the different sections and tie them together. Work your way around the crystal, tying the thread and creating a net for your stone. If you are making your necklace with a rough crystal, it is helpful to work with the ridges and edges of the stone. This will help the stone stay in place when wearing it. 

The process of knotting and making the crystal netting can be challenging when trying to get the hang of it at first. But don’t worry if it doesn’t look even! The beauty of DIY jewelry is that every piece you make is unique and has its own style. 

Carry on knotting the string until you get to the top of the stone. 

Step 5: Tie the Pieces of String 

Once you have reached the top of the stone, bring all the pieces of string together and tie them in a knot. Then what you do with the rest of the necklace is up to you! You could leave the string how it is or tie them at the top to complete the necklace. You may also wish to plait or knot the string.
